UNIVERSITY OF MANITOBA – CANADA RESEARCH CHAIR – TIER 2 (NSERC)
Ecosystem Dynamics & Metabolism Chair, Departments of Biological Sciences
(Science) and Human Nutritional Sciences (Human Ecology)
Winnipeg, MB

Posted: February 4, 2010

The University of Manitoba is seeking applications or nominations for a Canada Research Chair established by the Government of Canada to enable Canadian Universities to foster world-class research excellence www.chairs.gc.ca. Our Strategic Research Plan identifies a joint Tier 2 NSERC Chair in Human Nutritional Sciences (Human Ecology) and Biological Sciences (Science) in the area of Ecosystem Dynamics & Metabolism as a priority umanitoba.ca/admin/vp_research/media/Strategic_Research_Plan.pdf.
Position # 10848 and # 10863 CRC.

The focus of research to be conducted by the CRC recruit can be described as metabolic biochemistry, where nutrition and biochemistry interface with ecology. There is an intimate link between the metabolism of key molecules, including nutrients, and the capacity of an organism to respond or adapt to environmental change. For this reason, especially in the light of global climate change and industrialization, it is critical that the metabolic handling of toxins, reactive oxygen species, and food and food-supplement components are conceptualized and understood from the organism to the ecosystem level in order to plan how best to sustain biodiversity and the environment in general. The research will span topics including protein and mitochondrial function, regulation of cellular metabolism, food and food components, and the interactions between an organism and its environment. Work by the proposed Chair in Ecosystem Dynamics and Metabolism will influence diverse subject areas, from human development and aging, to the evolution of stress-adaptation.

Candidates must be established scholars with demonstrated potential of becoming world leaders in their research area. They should have a strong commitment toward interdisciplinary research and collaboration, and the ability to attract excellent graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. The successful applicant must have less than 10 years experience since receiving a Ph.D. and have an independent research program. The appointment will be full-time tenure track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with a reduced teaching commitment. The incumbent will further strengthen the research and teaching in both departments, and could initiate and facilitate a wide-ranging research program and develop contributions through new courses and programs. The candidate will be expected to forge a link between the two departments by interdisciplinary collaborations and interactions arising from areas of mutual and evolving interest.

Resources available to the Chair include a dynamic research environment at the Fort Garry Campus of the University of Manitoba. Candidates are encouraged to review departmental umanitoba.ca/faculties/human_ecology/departments/hns/index.html; umanitoba.ca/science/biological_sciences, faculty and University websites.

The University of Manitoba is located in Winnipeg, a multicultural community of over 675,000 people. Its ethnic and cultural diversity is celebrated through many annual festivals, and world-class arts, entertainment and professional sports. Winnipeg boasts a balanced lifestyle with affordability, and is located close to superb outdoor recreational activities and a wide variety of lakes, beaches and wilderness areas. For more information visit: www.destinationwinnipeg.ca/ , www.winnipeg.ca/interhom/, and http://www.gov.mb.ca/.

The University of Manitoba encourages applications from qualified women and men, including members of visible minorities, Aboriginal peoples, and persons with disabilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. Women are particularly encouraged to apply.

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, a brief five-year research plan, a covering letter in which candidates define the fit to their vision of the position, and the names and contact information of three referees should be sent electronically by February 18, 2010 to Chair, CRC Search Committee, c/o mfoster@cc.umanitoba.ca.

Application materials, including letters of reference, will be handled in accordance with the protection of privacy provisions of “The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy” (Manitoba). Please note that curriculum vitaes may be provided to participating members of the search process. All Chair nominations by the University of Manitoba are subject to review and final approval by the CRC Secretariat. The anticipated start date for the position is July 1, 2011.
