Postdoctoral Fellowship
Evolutionary and behavioural ecology of salmon at sea
Memorial University
St. John's, NL

Posted: December 2nd, 2011

A postdoctoral fellow is sought to work on the evolutionary and behavioural ecology of salmon at sea. The research is in association with the Ocean Tracking Network, a collaborative network of researchers working in Canada’s three oceans to explore questions about the interrelations among ocean physics, animal ecology, and the impacts of climate variability and change on ocean ecosystems (http://oceantrackingnetwork.org/). Fundamental to the network is to develop an understanding of movements and migrations of model or keystone species in relation to oceanographic features and variability. One such group of species is the salmonid fishes, which growing evidence indicates are being impacted substantially by changes in ocean conditions. For salmonid fishes, such as Atlantic salmon, temporal variation in the utilization of habitats in the marine environment is likely to occur at both broad and fine scales, reflecting both ecological and metabolic factors. The purpose of the research behind the fellowship is to explore these patterns in Atlantic salmon repeat breeders (kelts) and smolts using, among other approaches, geolocation archival tags developed specifically for this application.

The fellowship is available for two years (salary $42,000-45,000 per annum) and will occur within the evolutionary ecology research group of Dr. Ian Fleming of Memorial University’s Ocean Sciences Centre (http://www.mun.ca/osc/ifleming/index.php). There will also be close collaboration with researchers at Fisheries and Oceans Canada (Martha Robertson and Dave Reddin). There is considerable flexibility and scope within the project to develop the specific branches of the research by combining fundamental and applied science in relation to salmon at sea.

The ideal candidate will hold a PhD in evolutionary, behavioural or fisheries ecology, or a related field, and have a strong publication record and good quantitative skills. Experience with the interpretation of geolocation information from data storage tags would be an advantage, as would spatial analysis skills within Geographic Information Systems formats. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to develop collaborative research within our group and disseminate results through refereed publications. Moreover, they should be prepared to share their enthusiasm for research and associated skills openly within the research group, and by doing so, contribute to a dynamic research environment. Start date: between January and March 2012.

Prospective candidates should email a cover letter, CV and contact information for three people who can serve as references. Review of applicants will begin 15 December, 2011 and continue until the position is filled.
