Dr. Mark Brigham, CCUBC President, University of Regina Dr. Hugh Broders, CCUBC 2nd VP, Local Host, St. Mary's University

Dear Biology Heads and Chairs:

We are pleased to invite you to our annual meeting of the Canadian Council of University Biology Chairs (CCUBC) in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The meeting will take place from 24 - 26 November at The Prince George Hotel in downtown Halifax. As always, we anticipate an excellent formal program along with insightful and informative discussion.

Our annual fall meeting for members consists of formal workshops and plenty of informal discussions. The range of topics that we typically cover includes: curriculum development, personnel management, interactions with higher administration and granting council funding. One of the highlights of the meetings are the 5-minute reports presented by each Head or Chair that highlight common issues, trends and innovative programmatic developments. We welcome suggestions for specific topics that you would like to see addressed.

For many of us, the most rewarding aspect of these meetings are the formal and informal discussions amongst Heads and Chairs in which we share concerns, pressing issues, and insights. Whether one is a veteran leader with years of experience, or a brand new Departmental Chair, those who attend the meeting find the exchange of ideas both useful and enjoyable.

We are busy planning sessions for our November CCUBC meeting and would love some help with one session in particular. A facet of Universities, Faculties and Departments that is becoming increasingly important is the creation and implementation of Strategic Plans. Some of you will have either gone through this exercise recently or are looking to embark on such a venture. We would like to have a panel discussion of this with 3-4 folks. If you would be willing to offer 5-10 mins with your take on this issue, we would be keen to have you participate. Please let me know soonest so that we can plan accordingly. We especially ask that you consider whether the optional tour of the Observatory is of interest and let Hugh know.

On this page you will find the online registration form, program and accommodation details. We encourage you to register for the meeting by the 15th of September 2011. A block of rooms with preferential rates has been reserved.

We also encourage you to submit nominations for the three awards presented annually by CCUBC, including:

Please note that the deadline for receiving the nominations is September 15, 2011, for more information please visit the Awards page.

If there are any questions about the actual meeting contact Hugh. For more general questions about CCUBC or the meeting program, please get in touch with Mark.

Finally, we hope you are finding some time over the summer to devote to your research and much needed vacation before September.

Sincerely,
Mark and Hugh
